The Incident
Police report that the assault began around 10:25 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township, about 50 miles north of Detroit.
According to investigators, the attacker rammed his vehicle through the church’s front doors before firing multiple rounds inside the crowded sanctuary. He then started a fire that quickly spread through parts of the building, complicating rescue efforts.
Officers who arrived on scene exchanged gunfire with the suspect, who was killed during the confrontation. Fire crews contained the blaze shortly after noon.
Victims and Injuries
Authorities confirmed that one person died at the scene and nine others sustained injuries, some critical. Several of the wounded are being treated at local hospitals, and officials cautioned that the casualty numbers could rise as investigators finish searching the damaged structure.
Suspect and Investigation
Police identified the shooter as Thomas Jacob Sanford, 40, of nearby Burton, Michigan. Investigators are working to determine a motive, combing through the suspect’s home, phone records, and online activity. So far, no connection between Sanford and the congregation has been publicly established.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer condemned the attack, calling it “an unspeakable act of violence in a place of worship.”
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued a statement expressing deep sorrow and pledging full cooperation with law enforcement.
